Welcome!
I’m Sarahbeth.
My work focuses on couples therapy and trauma-informed individual sessions. I'm here to support you where you are. Helping clients process complicated childhoods and working with relationships are my primary specialties. I’m dedicated to helping individuals navigate childhoods and relationships affected by personality disorders (such as Borderline Personality Disorder or narcissistic traits), religious trauma, and high-control dynamics.

I genuinely love working with couples of all stages and types, helping them look beyond the surface of conflict to uncover what’s really going on. (Hint: It’s not just about the dishes—it’s about what they represent. Together, we’ll figure out how to get your real needs met with your partner.)

I’m certified in Gottman Method Couples Therapy Levels 1 and 2, but I approach therapy with an emotion-focused lens. The Gottmans’ research, based on over 40 years of studying married couples, shows they can predict with over 94% accuracy which couples will stay together or separate. They identified specific communication patterns and behaviors that lead to healthy, connected relationships—and which ones don’t. If things are escalating in ways you don’t want, there is hope.

I don’t just want your relationship to last for decades—I want you to feel connected and supported in your partnership. Couples therapy helps improve communication, deepen emotional intimacy, and build healthy conflict-resolution skills. Let’s get you unstuck.

I’m also sex-positive and comfortable working with polyamorous, ethically non-monogamous, and/or kink relationships. You will never need to defend your relationship structure to me in a session.

In addition to my couples work, I’m certified in Prepare and Enrich premarital counseling. This program helps couples explore key areas of potential conflict before marriage. The average wedding cake costs $500, and a wedding dress runs over $2,400, so why not invest in your relationship too? While Prepare and Enrich has faith-based origins, I’m trained in the secular method, and spirituality will only be included if you request it.

Therapy can also support couples moving in together by navigating finances, chores, and conflict management—common tension points during this transition.

Feeling blindsided by how a new baby changed your relationship and life? You’re not alone—67% of couples experience a decline in relationship satisfaction for up to three years after their first child. I’m certified in Bringing Baby Home, a Gottman modality designed to help you navigate this life change. As a mother of three, I understand both the joy and the challenges that come with this new chapter.

Additionally, my advanced training in Perinatal Mental Health Psychotherapy supports clients whose experiences with pregnancy, childbirth, or early parenthood didn’t match their expectations. Whether it’s infertility, infant loss, postpartum depression, or other complex emotions, this is a safe space to process the grief and challenges that may arise around expanding your family.

Before shifting to clinical mental health, I spent 20 years as a college English instructor. I saw firsthand how deeply the pandemic affected my students’ lives, which led me to pursue a career change. I was certified as a trauma-informed instructor -- but during COVID, it became clear that mental health, trauma processing, and relationship repair are crucial for thriving in life. I went back for another graduate degree in clinical mental health at the College of William & Mary. Since then, I’ve loved working with clients in the therapy room to build and re-build more authentic lives.

I’m based in Richmond and offer in-person sessions in Henrico (near Short Pump), but I also offer telehealth therapy for clients across Virginia. Schedule a free 15-minute phone call or virtual consultation to see if my experience and specialties align with your needs. I’d love to help you.
